FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft has developed the PMMC G5 to meet the demands for today’s and future missions in any operational scenario. Its design as a multirole platform, suitable for any kind of equipment, offers broad flexibility for the user and makes the PMMC G5 a perfect Armoured Combat Support Vehicle.
The integrated mine protection and a variable concept for ballistic protection guarantee maximum protection for operators and soldiers. The PMMC G5 can transport up to 11 soldiers in flexible and ergonomic seats. Three different hatches, a huge ramp at the rear and an additional door in the ramp allow the quick and comfortable access to the vehicle. Due to the huge ramp the disembarking of an infantry squad only takes 10-15 seconds.
The compact vehicle construction of the PMMC G5, equipped with state-of-the-art video and battle management system, NGVA Standard and the possibility of integration of vetronics, offers great situational awareness that is crucial for missions in urban terrain. The driver benefits from a large field of view through transparent armour, providing the same level of ballistic protection as the complete vehicle. As a result, the driver always has an excellent view of the surroundings, so that the driver can operate the PMMC G5 safely under any condition.
Another advantage of the PMMC G5 is the track system, allowing excellent mobility in any kind of terrain, even in areas where wheeled vehicles reach their limits, and also perfect manoeuvrability in urban terrain, as the tracked suspension system allows smallest turning circles and pivot turns. This urban mobility and agility provides additional safety for the operators and the soldiers. Propelled by a reliable and proven drive system kit, and equipped with a rubber track system, the PMMC G5 is able to drive in any terrain and to follow modern main battle tanks without any problems.
In Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) configuration, as presented at EUROSATORY 2016, the PMMC G5 is equipped with the 360° Local Situational Awareness System (LSAS), a joint development of KTK Kommunikationstechnik, First Sensor Mobility, and TES Electronic Solutions, providing all connected users (Driver, Commander, and Crew) with an individual, user-specific overview of the direct vehicle surroundings.
Manoeuvring the vehicle is eased enormously for the driver, whereas a virtual window in the hull is implemented for the crew. This reduces motion sickness effects and on the other side increases the awareness of the vehicle surroundings.
The system is based on digital camera systems with a software-based video rendering. This system approach enables integration into existing vehicles and new vehicles. Additional bespoke integrations are planned.
The heart of FFG’s G5 JFST is the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Platform BAA II from Airbus Defence & Space (DS) Optronics, mounted on a telescopic mast. The BAA II is equipped with modern high performance sensors: a high resolution CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) camera and ATTICA, a cooled thermal imager of the third generation. The modern image fusion function allows to combine the images of the thermal camera with those of the daytime camera.
BAA II furthermore consists of an eye-safe laser rangefinder and a laser target illuminator. With these, the soldier can mark, illuminate and assign targets, thus shortening the overall reaction time required. Both, the cooled thermal imager ATTICA and the CCD daytime camera offer four fields of view. These grant the viewer both, a broad overview as well as the possibility to recognise even the smallest details.
As a Surveillance and Reconnaissance Platform, BAA II allows the user to recognise targets at a distance of up to 16km and to accurately identify them at up to five kilometres.
Airbus DS Optronics also profits from the operational experiences in Afghanistan, which have paved the way for the successor system BAA NG (new generation). It features the combined proprietary RedKite camera system. Consisting of a CCD daytime camera, a short-wave infrared camera (SWIR) and a combination of a laser rangefinder and a laser designator. This allows for higher ranges than technologically possible before and the detection of targets in fog and haze as well as camouflaged targets.
To complete FFG’s G5 JFST, the vehicle is equipped with a Digital Map Table from Fraunhofer Institute (IOSB), which combines different visualisation techniques in a convenient way, such as every team member can grasp the necessary information at a glance.
In addition to the BAA II and the Digital Map Table, the G5 JFST is equipped with an intelligent Vehicle Network (iVeNet) from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). iVeNet is a vehicle network which shares all usable sensor data via computer unit CENTURION i7 from ATM Computersysteme with an optimised software solution. CENTURION i7 collects and clusters the available sensor data from, e.g. BAA II or LSAS and provides this information on displays like ATM VistaMaster.
CENTURION i7 offers a broad variety of interfaces, memory configuration and video converter as well as a Gigabit-Switch and an open viable architecture.
iVeNet in addition with LSAS is a great system solution that enables the vehicle crew to get a better and more comprehensive situational awareness in todays and future operations.
In order to provide firepower, the PMMC G5 can carry any kind of remote controlled weapon station (RCWS) like the FLW 200 Plus or the Dynamit Nobel Defence (DND) Dual FEWAS.
At EUROSATORY 2016, the G5 JFST is equipped with DND’s Dual FEWAS, a RCWS capable of simultaneous mounting of two different armaments. Surveillance and target acquisition capabilities are provided by a day colour CCD zoom camera and a night thermal imager (FLIR) camera; enabling day and night detection and recognition at ranges compatible with the weapons ranges. For ballistic computation, a laser range finder (LRF) is integrated.
In addition, the design of the PMMC G5 results in very low Life Cycle Costs, so that the PMMC G5 also fulfils commercial demands by a maximum cost effectiveness.
The intelligent combination of these features make the PMMC G5 the perfect successor for every replacement of ageing APCs, equally on tracks and on wheels.
