A report issued by Munich-based consultants Roland Berger, in association with India’s National Association of Software & Services Companies (NASSCOM) and the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA), suggests the Indian defence and aerospace market will consume some U$70-72 billion over the next ten years. Some $58 billion of that will be dedicated to large scale systems.
These numbers could increase, according to comments circulating in government circles after the report’s publication, largely due to the June decision to allow up to 100% foreign direct investment in defence manufacturing. India is currently the world’s seventh largest defence market and the largest single importer of military equipment.
Both IESA and NASSCOM have made policy recommendations to the government regarding how to make better use of India’s acknowledged information technology prowess, stressing that the opportunity to leverage these capabilities specifically for defence and aerospace applications has been ignored to date. A wealth of opportunities for potentially rapid exploitation have been identified, including nano technologies in sensors and C5ISR systems, as well as miniaturisation and microminiaturisation.
