Elettronica is exhibiting in Hall 1 – Stand 18 at MSPO, presenting its technological breakthroughs and advanced solutions: VIRGILIUS, the Integrated EW-Architecture System, ELT/572 DIRCM the winning response to MANPADS threats in the E/O spectrum, and ELT/160, a light Radar Warning Receiver. Other core solutions are the DASS POD of the Eurofighter TYPHOON, and the Smart Elettronica Maintenance System.
Elettronica systematically allocates considerable investments in research for the purpose of developing its modern assets in the whole frequency spectrum: - in the lower frequency bandwidth for radar and non-radar signals, including Communications EW; - in the higher frequency bandwidth up to E/O, to achieve the utmost in-house capability.
The complete ownership of the employed technologies allows the company to establish solid and unrestricted partnerships with the customer as well as to focus on continuous improvements. Specifically, Elettronica’s stand at MSPO, Hall E, stand 18, displays the following systems:
VIRGILIUS, an advanced, multiplatform, fully integrated, flexible Electronic Warfare architecture which stresses signal processing techniques and key enabling technology aspects to deliver a superior range of performance. A modular design approach makes it possible to tailor the proposed solution to the specific needs of the Customer/Final User, both for emitter detection, classification, identification as well as to counter a large threat variety including: radar controlled Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA), Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM), Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM), Early Warning, Search and modern Multifunction Radars for different classes of platforms.
ELT/572 DIRCM (Directional Infrared Countermeasures): the Elettronica’s response to MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defence Systems) missiles, which remain one of the major threats to airborne platforms, easily encountered in the asymmetric conflicts and in terrorist actions. The most reliable and effective approach to counter this type of evolving threat is represented by the use of Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM). The fiber laser technology, applied in the ELT/572, enhances DIRCM effectiveness by improving performances, effectiveness, reliability and efficiency, while it overcomes the traditional setbacks of previous DIRCM suites by reducing the installation constraints and the even more critical and complex setting-up, alignment and maintenance operations. It also allows the use of a small, highly dynamic turret that can very quickly slew and, driven by sophisticated algorithms, accurately concentrate the laser beam on the seekers of the incoming missile threats, ensuring an all-around effective protection of the platforms even against multiple simultaneous threats.
ELT/160: the ELT/160 family of low cost light Radar Warning Receivers is designed to provide self-protection for utility and combat aircraft and helicopters. It protects the platform during operations in insecure areas, anti-tank missions and escort of ground vehicles. To meet the challenge posed by modern threats, this family of Radar Warning Receivers in all its versions, from the light to the combat version, is designed to detect, analyse and identify all the intercepted electromagnetic emissions that can pose a threat to the platform in an extremely short time and beyond the maximum weapon system engagement distance. As all Elettronica’s passive systems, the ELT/160 RWR extractor can perform perfectly in absence of pre-flight information.
Praetorian Podded self-protection system for the Eurofighter TYPHOON. This system, enables the aircraft to evaluate the electromagnetic scenario and then to implement an automatic ECM response to single or multiple threats for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The Praetorian is the result of an international industrial project that helped to merge engineering and innovation into a modern product for EW applications ensuring a state-of-the-art system with high performance capabilities. This integrated ESM/ECM system features such modern technologies as solid-state transceivers, electronic scanning antennas, the DRFM (Digital Radio Frequency Memory) for enhanced the Platform Survivability, and a system SW featuring a high level of robustness and flexibility to effectively cope with different operating environments. The Praetorian Suite also includes an active Missile Approach Warner (MAW), to detect incoming missiles; equipped with high power transmitter and suitably located to protect the platform in all weather conditions, the MAW provides the pilot with a warning indication and activates the prescribed countermeasures.
Smart Elettronica Maintenance System The Smart Elettronica Maintenance System (SEMS) represents Elettronica’s most advanced system support product deriving from its long standing experience in providing customized solutions. This innovative approach takes full advantage of the next generation diagnostic and prognostic hardware embedded in Elettronica’s new EW Systems, and provides the maintenance operator with intuitive touch screen interface and multimedia capabilities, as well as step-by-step guidance in performing the often time-critical troubleshooting, fault isolation and recovery processes. SEMS allows to easily keep a complete and always updated maintenance record and configuration status accounting, and includes an integrated material management system that can be accessed online by the User, as well as Elettronica, and by the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in order to provide a prompt information management process together with readily available updated technical documentation and training sessions.
Elettronica’s commitment to innovation reflects its dedication in pursuing the company’s objectives and meeting customers’ requirements. Another fundamental and new area is how the company is approaching the EW Cyber Warfare field. Elettronica is now also developing modular scalable EW solutions (ESM/ELINT/CESM/COMINT and ECM) for Unmanned Vehicles dedicated both to the traditional EW MALE and HALE missions as well as for tactical UAV, complementing imaging sensors for an EW-enhanced Situation Awareness in land and maritime patrol missions. One example is the ELT/819 family, designed to fulfill ESM and ELINT tasks conceived for such applications as in SIGINT (SIGnal INTelligence) multirole aircrafts. It can provide users with an effective intelligence capability by exploiting its unique features, deriving from its advanced architecture based on both a Wide Open and SH (Super heterodyne) Digital Receiver, that endows the system with a full ELINT capability, while simultaneously ensuring an effective Surveillance function.
