According to Dan Enstedt, President & CEO, Saab Asia Pacific, Saab has always had a strong product presence across the region stretching from Korea across to India. "Our products have found favour with most countries in South East Asia and have stood the test of time," he explained at Indodefence 2014. "As our customers have become larger and their challenges have become more complex, we have established offices that take us closer to them. We opened our new office in Indonesia in 2013 and followed up with a programme to cooperate in the field of education."

The Indonesian Armed Forces have been customers for RBS 70 and GIRAFFE radars and Saab sees a lot of developments across a wider spectrum of areas. Indonesia faces fairly unique challenges ranging from the geographic challenge of securing over 17,000 islands to being the guardians of one of the world’s most sensitive sea channel. There are threats of pirates, illegal fishing, logging and immigrants. All require affordable, high quality surveillance systems that are able to deliver results.

For Indonesia, it is not merely a question of adding up the numbers required to police such a vast and complex land and ocean terrain, but a question of how assets multiply capability through technology platforms. For example, data linking between land, air and sea assets result in the ability to synchronise information and deploy the best and fastest solution.

"INDO DEFENCE 2014 is a great opportunity for us to showcase our complete range for Indonesia," Enstedt said. "We have a strong offer for various Indonesian programmes and we hope, through this exhibition, to showcase our technology and innovation."

This includes the GRIPEN new generation, multi-role fighter aircraft. The Indonesian government is planning to replace the F-5 fighter aircrafts. The Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) polices a very large area. Indonesia’s vast archipelago includes about 17,000 islands stretching over nearly 2 million square kilometres. It has a coastline of 54,716km to protect and three land borders (Timor-Leste 228km, Malaysia 1,782km, and Papua New Guinea 820 kilometres). Moreover, it sits right at Southeast Asia’s maritime chokepoints, such as the Strait of Malacca.

Given this large geographical spread, effective Air Force capability requires high availability of aircraft, long time on station, short turn arounds, long ferry range and large combat radius. The country spends around 1% of its GDP on Defence so it would be looking at an aircraft that isaffordable, superior and have low operational cost. This is where Saab sees the GRIPEN as an ideal solution for Indonesia. Using the latest technology, GRIPEN is capable of performing an extensive range of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions employing the latest weapons. GRIPEN is designed to meet the demands of existing and future threats, while simultaneously meeting strict requirements for flight safety, reliability, training efficiency and low operating costs.

GRIPEN is a true multirole fighter, designed as such from the very beginning. This means it can perform missions in all the three roles: Air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance. It can change role while airborne, and it can even act in multiple roles simultaneously. This simultaneous capability will grow over time, as the AESA radar and other systems are further developed. This multi-role capability could help the Indonesian Air Force use the same aircraft for different roles, thereby reducing the need for different aircraft to play different roles. The GRIPEN could replace the F-5E/F not only in its interceptor role but also play a strike fighter role.

GRIPEN C has an overall maximum ferry range of approximately 3,000 kilometers. The ferry range is reached at high altitude with maximum use of external drop tanks and no weapons attached. The ferry range for GRIPEN E with large drop tanks (optional) is approximately 4,000 kilometers.

The Saab stand also features, among others, GRIPEN Fighter Model, GRIPEN GCS Simulator, ERIEYE Surveillance Aircraft, 340 MSA Surveillance Aircraft, 9AIR Compact C2, 9AIRBORNE Mission Management System, RBS70 NG Trainer, 9Land C2, Underwater Vehicles Double Eagle, MAPAM, Battleteck and NLAW.  Additionally, the stand also includes 9LV Combat Management System, RBS-15 Anti-Ship Missile, CEROS 200, Sea GIRAFFE AMB/1X, TactiCall, Naval Offer, Bofors 40mm Mk 4 gun model and video display for Electronic Warfare Systems, Signature Management, Air Traffic Management, coastline Automatic Information System and Vessel Traffic Management solutions.
