D3O is presenting its prototype high performance shock absorbing helmet system in Hall 5 Stand J831. The helmet system has been developed in response to the significant rates of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) suffered by allied soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan – 35% of US and UK military deaths, and 31,000 British soldiers on combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan suffered mild TBI (mTBI), resulting in high rehabilitation, compensation and re-training costs. It was the understanding that innovative materials can increase protection, reduce costs and crucially reduce avoidable injuries and deaths each year, which led to the development of  the Shock Absorbing Helmet System prototype.

The D3O helmet system offers personal protection to soldiers which is considerably beyond any existing product on the market, given the fact that current helmets used by allied forces focus on ballistic protection, but modern warfare and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) generate blunt trauma head injuries. The helmet system has been designed to combine both superior impact protection through the D3O patented technology, with wearer comfort, and the product includes innovative features such as an inflatable air bladder to enable customisation depending on head sizes; a moisture cap to enable sweat management, and a wipe-clean, durable protective skin to facilitate good hygiene – all developed with insight and intelligence from former or current serving soldiers.

Winner of the 2014 MIT Technology Review Innovation Award, the young French SME Sysnav unveiled its SYSNAV MILITARY technology , a navigation solution robust to GPS flaws, dedicated to heavy and light vehicles. Revealed at booth GF 423 (Hall 6), Sysnav MILITARY, a revolutionary French navigation system, GPS-free, is designed for critical environments. Ensuring precise localisation and orientation in any circumstance: The Holy Grail of navigation and geopositioning that remained a fantasy until now, reserved to some high-end applications related to deterrence. Gradually opened to the general public in the 2000’, GPS had its glory days, but has now reached its limitations. The military are well aware of it, and they are not the only ones. The loss of GPS signals due to critical environments-in particular jamming- or simply when entering covered areas (tunnels, forests, urban canyons etc.) remains a difficult issue to address despite advanced GPS solutions.

David Vissière, Founding President of Sysnav commented: “The defense sector is our priority. We know it well, and above all, it is truly an innovative sector. Take the GPS or the internet for example: both innovations has been developed by the military. The information of localization is becoming more and more strategic in wider society. Robotics, logistics, port and rail sectors: they all have real needs in the matter, but not all them will provide innovation with the same time to market...We play a role in the progressive change of usages. For example, in the medical world, we developed with clinicians from the French Institute of Myology Association (AIM) a cutting-edge solution for medical actimetrics (activity measurement), designed to monitor the evolution of neuro-degenerative diseases, such as myopathy.

Founded by military engineers, SYSNAV is a French SME that designs, develops and commercializes high-precision geopositioning, navigation and motion capture systems. SYSNAV rugged solutions are designed to work in GPS-denied environments, based on its ground-breaking magneto-inertial navigation technology, awarded by the 2014 MIT Technology Prize. These solutions target the defence, security, medical, robotics markets amongst others.

Emerging global trends are impacting the operating environment of light tactical interdiction vehicles for military, law enforcement and homeland security operations, particularly helicopters and patrol boats. As they engage in higher-risk scenarios, such as supporting clandestine operations and penetrating inner harbours and coastlines, these vehicles require enhanced armour protection that won't compromise their speed, agility, range and payload capacity. Simply adding armour made from traditional materials such as ceramics, glass, aramid and even polyethylene is no longer enough, whereas innovative, lightweight materials that can deliver top protection can optimise vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, capacity and maneuverability. DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fibre, branded as DYNEEMA, and a world leader in life protection materials and high-performance fibers, sees next-generation materials technologies as an important part of the solution. This view is supported by industry experts who predict the use of UHMwPE materials in armor applications will show double-digit growth in the next five years.

"DSM Dyneema has strategically focused our development of innovative materials for vehicle armor to stay ahead of evolving industry trends," said Shitij Chabba, Global Business Segment Director, DSM Dyneema. "As helicopters, patrol boats and other light tactical vehicles increasingly take on higher-risk roles domestically and internationally, they will require advanced armour that is optimized for new missions and environments. A common challenge affecting all these vehicles is weight, which has a profound impact on performance, efficiency and agility. Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology, built on our Radical Innovation platform, is a disruptive breakthrough that cuts vehicle armor weight dramatically compared to traditional materials while providing higher ballistic protection."

The new DYNEEMA Force Multiplier Technology, which combines breakthroughs in polymer science, next-generation UHMwPE fiber technology and unique uni-directional engineering, addresses all three market trends by reducing the weight of hard ballistics armor by up to 25 percent. The benefits of significantly lighter armor include greater vehicle agility, speed, fuel efficiency and capacity. Dyneema(r) Force Multiplier Technology is built on DSM Dyneema's Radical Innovation platform, the company's newest product development program me.

DSM Dyneema showcases the new products for vehicle armoring from the company's Radical Innovation platform at booth 6 J #373.

At Eurosatory 2014, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems exhibits SPOTLITE-M, an in-motion enemy fire-source detection, positioning and classification system. SPOTLITE is a family of electro-optical (EO) products that quickly and accurately detect and locate enemy fire and swiftly close the sensor-to-shooter loop to neutralize the enemy and to initiative on the battle field.

Rafael's SPOTLINE (Photo: Rafael)

SPOTLITE – M, an EO system installed on ACVs and other vehicles, detects and locates an enemy that is firing small arms, RPG bombs, anti-tank missiles, and rockets, in motion, day and night, at a range of up to 360°.

These system capabilities allow forces to perform several operations concurrently:

  • At platform level - immediate use of jammers/smoke screens, barrel slaving to the location point and prompt firing and immediate backward/forward withdrawal
  • At tactical unit level (platoon, company, battalion) the enemy location coordinates are in the unit computer within seconds. They are then sent through the C2 networks to relevant clients and to various shooters who can receive the target coordinates and quickly and accurately slave their sights to these coordinates, or to Special Forces active in the area of the incident.

The system has several technical capabilities that have a direct effect on the level of success in the battle field, e.g. locating (extracting coordinates of) the firing enemy in motion. This capability enables the threatened platform to continue moving while performing combat drills and techniques and using jamming means. Other technologies, unlike SPOTLITE – M, require the platform to stop (for ranging) which is inconceivable when the platform is threatened by an approaching anti-tank missile.

Another capability is: Locating the firing enemy beyond the effective range of the fired munitions. This capability (in addition to the ability to extract the coordinates of the firing enemy) allows not only to defend the manoeuvring platform but also to neutralize the fire source by sending the targets through the C2 networks to various sources of precise fire such as electro-optical missiles (the SPIKE Family), precise artillery, attack helicopters, and fighter aircraft. The indicated capabilities can be implemented day and night.

Saab has a commanding presence at Eurosatory 2014 with a full range of land warfare systems on show. Eurosatory also sees the public debut of Saab’s new surface radar portfolio, a revolutionary mix of technology, capability and cost-effectiveness that adds a new dimension to the air surveillance and air defence radar market, on land and at sea (see MT 6/14 for further details, available at the show).

“At Eurosatory we will demonstrate the depth of Saab capabilities in the land domain, “ said Tomas Samuelsson , President Market Area Europe and Greater Middle East. “The Saab name is synonymous with excellence in aerospace, but we are also a market leader in land and naval systems. We have a very broad product portfolio with a unique ability to package and integrate those products for our customers. We don’t always have the space to show all of these products together, but Eurosatory gives us that room for manoeuvre.”

This year Saab is placing particular emphasis on its new surface radar product portfolio, its total training systems solutions and advanced vehicle systems. Tomas Samuelsson notes: “In the radar sector we now have an entirely new product family, operating with an entirely new level of advanced technology and cost-effectiveness. It is a game-changer for Saab and for the market. We are already a world-class provider of training systems and this is an area that will only increase in importance as armed forces seek to maintain their capabilities while deployments are reduced. Finally, in vehicle systems, we have a broad and complete range of products that is very well-respected by our customers and is gaining an increasing footprint in the market.”
